Keeping heating on overnight – is it worth it?

In this article, we will discuss the importance of keeping your heating on overnight instead of turning it off.

If you have a boiler supplying central heating, one of the main risks of turning your heating off when you go to bed is damage caused by frozen or burst pipes.

Did you know… water behaves differently to a lot of other materials, especially when it cools or freezes. Water can expand up to 9% from it’s original volume when frozen!

Pipes can freeze in as little as 6 hours when the outside temperature drops to below 0, or -7 for indoor pipes that are better insulated.

Frozen pipes will eventually thaw by themselves, but in the meantime, a build-up of water in your pipes can cause blockages and as the water expands when it freezes there is a risk of your pipe bursting.

In 2021, the average cost of repairing damage caused by a burst pipe in a domestic property was £9300.00. British Gas also advises you to do the following to prevent frozen pipes:

  • Have your gas or oil boiler serviced regularly. Better still, invest in an electric boiler which will not require extensive pipework or external flues, and does not need regular servicing.
  • Insulate your pipes and water tanks, especially outside pipework and pipes in cold areas of your home such as lofts and basements.
  • Encourage warm air flow by opening loft hatches and cupboard doors so warm air can reach the pipes in these areas.
  • Set your thermostat to at least 7ºC in cold weather, even when you are not home. This is a feature common on most thermostatic controllers called ”frost protection” and is often depicted by a snowflake symbol.
  • Fix any leaky taps to prevent drains from freezing.
  • Make sure you know where your stop tap is so you can turn off the water supply if a pipe freezes. It’s also a good idea to do this when you go away.

Sleeping in the cold can also pose a risk to your health. According to the NHS, if your bedroom is not sufficiently heated during the winter, this can leave you vulnerable to heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, particularly in the elderly and those with existing health conditions.

We know what you’re thinking –The price of gas and electricity is higher than ever and I can’t afford to have my heating on constantly. We hear you – money is tight, and we are all keeping an eye on our energy consumption.

However, what if we told you that over those especially cold nights, keeping your heating at a consistent and low temperature overnight could save you more money than turning it off and on?

Whenever you turn your heating on after a cold night, your radiators will have to stay on for longer and work harder to bring the room temperature back up, causing a massive spike in your energy usage. Keeping your heating on at a consistently low temperature overnight can result in lower energy consumption.

We recommend setting your heating to between 15 ºC and 18 ºC in the bedroom for a good night’s sleep, and the room-by-room control means you can set lower temperatures in other rooms during the night-time hours should you wish to.

This is especially useful if you have a baby, as the NHS recommends a slightly higher temperature of 16 ºC and 20 ºC for a baby’s room.

How can Climastar UK help?

The harmony range of efficient electric heating by Climastar, has unique features that can help. To start with there is the eco mode option on our programmable thermostats. This mode will instruct the heaters to warm the room up to 3 ºC below the set temperature, making it an ideal option for your night-time schedule.

In a similar way of keeping central heating on low during the night, It’s a great way of keeping your space warm, without using energy that isnt needed.

The most important feature that sets our electric heaters apart from others is the Harmony Heating Cruise Control (HACC). This technology makes use of a TRIAC device which allows the heater to only draw the power it needs to maintain a steady room temperature. Other electric heaters on the market will not have this device, meaning they will have to draw the full power capacity available to the heater, resulting in wasted energy.

So if you are looking for a better night’s sleep, warm your room and reduce the worry of excessive electricity consumption – check out Climastar’s Harmony range of electric radiators.
